We enjoyed our Saturday in Okinawa, which felt very American as we started the day watching Emelyn cheer for the Okinawa Youth Football league, which is a league for military kids stationed here. We walked a few blocks home and got ready for the rest of the day. Geoff and I decided being on base feels very much like The Truman Show - it feels so safe, positive and how life might have been 50 years ago.
We enjoyed lunch at the Tee House, which is a restaurant on base by the golf course that overlooks the East China Sea and the base runways. Afterwards, we all really enjoyed our visit to the Southeast Botanical Gardens where we saw beautiful tropical foliage and interacted with monkeys, a capybara, hedgehogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and many birds. The monkeys were the favorite.
We ended the day on base watching Frozen II with hundreds of others. Each movie screening begins with the National Anthem, and everyone stands. After a quick trip to the base exchange for some souvenirs we headed home to complete our popcorn dinner with bowls of Blue Bell ice cream. It was another great day!
