I spent yesterday afternoon with Leila at a medical clinic run by an American missionary doctor. She wasn't there but an African doctor that spoke decent English was, and he spent a lot of time with us. We waited in a sweltering hot hallway - it was 100 degrees last night at 9pm to give you some perspective. We talked a lot about her sickle cell anemia that a test from last year showed she has. I told him we are praying that test is wrong. He liked that and said anything is possible! He asked about her frequency of pain crises, which is inevitable with her type of SSA. We didn't know of any, but why would we since she has always been at the orphanage. Edem (translator) called the orphanage director who said he wasn't aware of any. The doctor was very perplexed, so we continue to hope and pray this means her SSA is mild or nonexistent. Please pray with us.
The doctor gave us the antibiotic she had been on in a syrup form, which we are so thankful for because trying to get her to take a pill was not easy. He also gave us a folic acid supplement because of her anemia, ibuprofen for the fever and a malaria medication because malaria is very dangerous for SSA patients. The American doctor wants to see her again tomorrow because she is very concerned about the anemia. I hope she will have more energy today so we can enjoy our time together.
Geoff has been busy helping with repairs and installation of fans here at the LOC. He's happy to help and be busy. We will also move from the bunk room we've been in to a 1 bedroom apartment at the LOC today. This will give us some more space to just be with one another and give Juanita and Rodrigo a break from us! They are great, gracious friends, but we've totally invaded their 1 bedroom apartment!
