Football and Domesticity

It seems with football season I spend more and more time in the kitchen - by choice, of course - my husband is not ordering me to fetch him snacks and beer (OK, maybe every once in a while)! I really do love this time of year - routines begin again, fall is approaching and nights with windows open are right around the corner (or in the case of tonight - they are here!). So, today after many busy weekends we took it easy and enjoyed a big breakfast, ran a few errands and had an afternoon and evening of football for Geoff and cooking for me, while of course paying attention to the must-see hits and plays as instructed by Geoff (to be clear, I am not anti-football, but I am partial to UVA, Virginia Tech and high-stake games like the Superbowl).

So, what fun things did I whip up in the kitchen while Geoff enjoyed the first football weekend? I made a homemade lasagna with ground turkey and snickerdoodles for the adults and had my first attempt at making baby food for Mary-Michael. This was perhaps the most exciting! I had always wanted to do this, but I'll admit the Cuisinart scared me a bit because it just has not been used much. Now, however, I feel like a pro! After using it to slice zucchini for dinner, I pureed zucchini and sweet potatoes tonight and felt incredibly domestic while doing so. Thanks to some handy storage containers and a baby food book from a friend along with tips from my cousin, we now have enough for at least a week. And once the pears ripen, we'll be pureeing those, too. Mary-Michael loved, loved, loved the zucchini tonight, which made me very happy since her Daddy's taste for veggies is so slim. Even with green all over her face, she is still pretty precious.

So bring on the football - my apron is waiting.
