The LINK™ 2014 LiveTen24 Men's Service Mission Update Two

SUNDAY
This morning the team woke up to Geoff playing foozball with his soon-to-be daughter Leila while his brother, Kam, held onto Mani who too, like Leila will soon be going to a new home in America. Earlier this morning Geoff, Kam and Scott went with Rodrigo (The LINK™ Niger Field Director) to Leila and Mani's orphanage, The Good Samaritan. Geoff hadn't seen Leila in a year and a half which made this a special moment in which the team could rejoice together. The open sincerity of Niger's children enables them to associate with the team members quickly and easily. They are, in their own fashion, equally welcoming to all of us.

After a short breakfast, the team headed to Rodrigo's new church which resembled those of 2000 years ago, with simple laid clay block walls, a thatched open-sided roofed chapel, and a floor of red Niger sand.

A month ago Rodrigo requested the head of the Niger Assemblies of God to attend and deliver the sermon. Per Rodrigo's request he came along with his wife and Rodrigo's co-minister-in-arms, Aime Kombari, who worked with Rodrigo to translate and deliver the message which centered around God's grace. The small children gathered on a blanket while the women both listened and tended the children, about 30 of us in all.  Russ gave testimony to a life once on the wrong track, but by the grace of God was rescued. This testimony was well-received by all in attendance. The message was followed-up by prayers for the women. We also prayed for the church, Rodrigo's vision, as well as a particular child who needed help with his studies. When the service ended we spent some time playing with the kids before driving across some rugged terrain to a relatively undeveloped area where Rodrigo has purchased land and marked off where a future church is to be built.

Afterwards, the team headed back to the LOC for a short break before lunch at a local restaurant,  Amandine's, with Rodrigo, the Lighty family (Jonathon, Ashley, and their new daughter Emma who beams to any and all--that's one happy child), Ashley and Edem, as well as others considered part of the LINK™ Niger family. Both of the soon-to-be adopted children were able to FaceTime their soon-to-be families which was very cool.

This afternoon we visited the CSEN orphanage run by Bernard and his wife Josee. Only later did we learn that Josee was in the hospital. We had the opportunity to pray for Josee with Bernard after being introduced to the children and given a tour of their complex.

Like the Remar Orphanage we visited the day before, Bernard and Josee started this orphanage out of their home and then expanded to the current size to accommodate more children. After the tour, the real fun began as some played football and soccer followed by some wrestling. Others swung on the swings with kids on their laps.

Philip spent vast amounts of energy tossing the young girls (Eva, Malika, Jemina, and others) high into the air over and over again. There were loads of smiles attached to fast moving feet and inquisitive countenances. There were certainly plenty of hugs all around along with the bracelets and suckers handed out by the team. The members of the team were sad and reluctant to leave after a joyous experience with an incredible group of children. Despite, sand-filled shoes and dirt-ridden clothes, the entire group was all smiles!

Joined yet again by the LINK™ Niger family, the team had a very nice dinner at Cote Jardien. Great food and fellowship enveloped the night, followed by another prayer and worship time on the roof at the LOC. Our experiences here have shaped all of us, brought each of us closer together, closer to God, and grateful for God's grace and mercy which has been evident in almost every person we've met so far. We certainly miss our families back home, but our experience here is that of a lifetime. To God be the glory for this special time here in Niger!

Good Morning to Me!

Nothing like a FaceTime chat with my husband and daughter in Niger to wake a girl up. That was the best alarm! Lord, I hope I didn't scare her with my disheveled look! They had been to church and back for lunch together. I sent Geoff with loads of pictures from my trip with her in July, pictures of the kids and the necklace I had given her in July. The chain broke when we were together, so I brought it home and put it on a leather cord. Geoff said she started crying when he gave it to her this morning. She remembered! Wow. What a treat to see that sweet face.

The LINK™ 2014 LiveTen24 Men's Service Mission - Update One

SATURDAY
We started the morning with rise n' shine duty carried out by Josh. Prayer and discussion was led by Matt, who spoke about God's call to Abraham and his family who lived in faith despite seeing immediate rewards. God's call, to those then and to us now, requires us to live and step out in faith, which is what we see in each other's decision to come to Niger together.

On the way to see giraffes at the game preserve, our convoy drove through a sea of humanity in Niamey and outside the city. We saw a vast array of locals either working, relaxing under makeshift tents or thatched enclosures, walking, or conversing amidst streams of motorcycles and donkey drawn carts. At the game preserve, we picked up a guide and we rode in the cargo racks atop the roofs of our vehicles as we headed into a hot, dusty, outback savannah. Despite never finding the giraffes, we all had a good time.

Before leaving for our visit to the Remar Orphanage, Geoff, Josh, and Dave pounded the downstairs wall while successfully installing an exhaust hood in the kitchen for the staff at the LOC.  Edem, one of the staff members was healed of sickness through the laying of hands and the power of prayer from the night before. What a blessing it was to see God's work firsthand within 24 hours of being in Niger.

We just got back after a wonderful afternoon visit with Paul, the gentle man who started this Remar Orphanage out of his own home back in the 1980's. Since then, it has been expanded many times over with help from a gentleman in Spain, the LINK™ | LiveTen24, which recently donated the solar powered panels and storage battery system which powers the well pump, and others.

We were entertained by some of the 37 children (ages 3-15) who live there. In the coming days we will visit the inner city branch of this orphanage which is for kids aged 15-23, some of whom also attend a local university while others learn the tailoring and carpentry trades. Paul took us all around his compound as our team found itself amazed by what he and his children have done in what appears to be very 'inhospitable' soil. Newly planted Papaya, manioc, noni (medicinal), tomatoes, and other trees make up their own garden which they use for food year-round. All 37 children are fed by this food supply and a 50 pound bag of rice purchased every two weeks.
What a great job Paul is doing by caring for these children while showing them the love of Christ which seemed to pour out from the children onto the members of the team. Each of us enjoyed dancing, singing, playing soccer and catch, and showing love to these kids, who despite having little, exuded more joy and happiness than any of us could've imagined.

Our gift to the children included a 'Christ' bracelet which each member tied onto the kids's wrists. The beads of the bracelet colored black, red, white, blue, green, and yellow represents our sin, the blood of Jesus, our purity through Jesus' sacrifice, water baptism, the growth in Christ, and the eternal promise of heaven, respectively.

If you want to see grown men become best buddies with softened hearts, pair them up with 37 loving kids and let the dancing begin! After our visit, we returned home for another great meal and fellowship followed by evening prayer and worship together. In all, it has been a great first full day in Niger.

Dear Friends & Family,

We heard from the team and they have arrived in Niger, safe and sound. They were greeted at the airport by some of our LINK™ Niger staff as well as several of our friends and co-workers there. The team is on their way to their accomodations at the LINK™ Outreach Center (LOC) where they will eat dinner together, have a brief team meeting, and enjoy a restful evening.

Please continue to pray for this mission. We look forward to sharing all the great things God has in store while they are serving in Niger, Africa.

And They're Off

Can I just say that I am so thankful and proud to have three family members on their way to Niger?! Thank you, God, for giving them boldness, courage and resources so that they could say yes and step out of what is comfortable. I know God is going to sculpt and grow them while they are there. Please cover them in prayer over the next eight days. I'll be posting updates I receive from The LINK, which will hopefully include some pictures of our sweet Leila, too!

We will miss Daddy! Especially this momma whose respect for single parents quadruples during times like this. Did I mention I might need some prayer, too!?

Geoff, Uncle Kam and my Dad before pray out and send off today!

That's what the Nigerien judge said to Leila joining our family!!! Thank you, Lord, for being a Father to the fatherless!!! Thank YOU for praying with us! Keep praying! Last week we had a successful homestudy renewal visit, Monday we found out we are exempt from new adoption laws as long as we get her home by end of 2015, and today we received a YES for our daughter.
